I remember back when I was in high school I took a class on Economics. I don’t even know if it’s still offered in schools these days. Probably Not! To be honest I didn’t understood anything taught in class that year no matter how hard I tried to “get it”. It wasn’t like I grew up hearing discussions about this at home. When the subject came up through watching the news or a show on T.V. no one in my home paid any attention to it. No, this was not of interest to me until after I got married, moved into our our place, and having to face to everyday challenges of life. My husband started talking about how he would have questions as a kid but no one he knew could answer them. One day in his teens he saw a show on PBS that struck his attention. I think it was called “Wall Street Weekly”. He took interest in what the guy was saying even though he didn’t understand much of what was said. That program ran for many years but was taken off the air sometime in the late 90’s. He said he hasn’t found good solid teaching like that since then. Then one day last month I received an unsuspected email inviting me to review a product centered around this very topic. I showed it to my hubby and he said “I want to see that. Please accept it for review”. I did and we haven’t regretted it.
“Everybody talks about it. The news is full of it. But most Christians know very little about it. Economics: it’s everywhere, influencing everything — and so rarely understood.” ~Economics for Everybody~
Compass Cinema and Ligonier Ministries teamed together to create a study called Economics for Everybody. Their motto is “Applying Biblical Principles to Work, Wealth, and the World”. Economics for Everybody is taught by Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. To learn more about who’s behind the makings of this study click here. Economics for Everybody “seeks to remedy our lack of true understanding about economics through an insightful and entertaining exploration of the principles, practices, and consequences of economics”.
Economics for Everybody consists of 12 lessons sold on a 2 set DVD or you can download the HD digital files for $45.00 total. Each of the videos run anywhere from 15-25 minutes. They start off short then as the lessons dig deeper into economic applications, they get longer in order to cover the material. There is also a 250 page paperback Study Guide (also have in PDF) for the price of $9.00. This guide includes an expanded outline of each lesson with additional material not included in the lessons. Each chapter has a message introduction, related Bible (scripture) readings, learning objectives, quotations, discussion questions, short answer questions, multiple-choice questions, and a listing of resources for future study. Here is a list of books they recommend on the subject of economics. You can expect to hear things about how God created economics, scarcity and plenty, entrepreneurship, marketing, God and politics, supply and demand, the effects of sin just to name a few. On their website you can check out sample videos of a lesson like this one…
Economics for Everybody can be used for church and small groups wanting to go through a unique series, traditional schools or homeschooling families with kids middle school age and older (great for a High School credit), or any adult who wants to understand what economics is all about in a fun and engaging way. Economics for Everybody is “funny, clever, profound and instructive all in one place”.
This has been a huge blessing for our family. My husband and son watched all of the videos together but I only saw bits and pieces of a few. After each video we would have a family discussion about what was taught. You should have seen how hyped up my hubby was. He kept talking about how no wonder we are messed up in our thinking as a society. It’s no better in the church because a lot of what’s been taught in schools and society has crept into the church as well. People are really frustrated, confused, and without hope. That’s why one of my favorite scriptures always comes to mind…“My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge…because they have rejected knowledge.” Hosea 4:6 ~my paraphrase. We didn’t use the study guide because I would rather wait until we are incorporating this into our school lessons rather than just for review purposes.
There is a presale going on right now at Compass Cinema store for Economics for Everybody. Through next week you can save 35% off if you order now. Instead of $45.00 the videos will cost $29.00 and instead of $9.00 the Study Guide will cost $7.00. If you’re looking for a deal and want this for the upcoming school year, hurry before it goes back to regular price. The information you learn is life changing!
