City on a Hill Studio is a non profit ministry that creates easy-to-use resources for believers, churches, and ministries. You can learn more about them by reading their who we are page. We were sent a copy of their Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit for us to review. I was pretty excited because I love to see my two guys spending time together. During those times I often stand back and smile at what God is doing in their relationship. When Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit arrived my husband was excited as well. He could not wait to get started so he could see how this would help him be a part of “building the next generation of godly men”.
Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit is a great Bible Study for Boys ages 8-17. The cost to purchase it is $29.99. Everything that a father would need to start mentoring or disciple his son is in this Father’s Starter Kit. It comes in a box that includes:
- A Group Discussion Guide that helps the father to lead his group
- A 1 on 1 Discussion Guide with discussion points and activities for fathers to use with their sons
- A DVD of the introductory videos for all 6 modules
- 10 Map Brochures (called Maprochures) that are maps of all the modules
- Also a free copy of the book “Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You.”
Now this would make a great Father Son Bible Study. How can Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit be a great father son bible study? For one it is a non denominational program for fathers and their sons. It takes a Bible-based approach to building young men through being discipled and mentored by fathers. Also it features guided weekly Biblical discussions with fun, hands-on and interactive activities. Not only is this for fathers and their sons, but can include a man's nephews, neighbors or friends. This would be idea for young men who do not have an engaged dad in their lives. Instead a caring man who wants to pour into their life can bring them along. It can also be done as a Small Group Study with a few dads and their sons. Good suggestions would be at church, a private meeting room somewhere, or even in someone’s home. It is sort of like when a church has someone host a weekly or monthly small group.
As I mentioned there are six modules. The first one is what came in the kit. It's called Embarking (Pack Your Bags and Go). It is made up of six weekly lessons. Each lessons was around six pages or so. In a lesson one will find things like “A Word to Dad”, “Group Session Review” (if you did this as part of a group), hands-on activity, a “Theme Verse”, things to “Say”, “Tips”, “Digging Deeper”, scriptures, and closing prayer. In the above picture you can see my husband and 17 year old son having one of their weekly meetings. Dad has his Embarking 1 on 1 Guide and son with his Bible. I would be off somewhere doing my thing while they had their time alone. Sometimes their weekly lesson would carry over into 2-3 days depending on how deep the discussions would be. Dad said son asked lots of questions which shows he was fully attentive.
If I happen to walk in or near where they met, I could not tell who was more excited to spend this time together. They both seemed to enjoy their session. Both of them like to talk so their conversation could go on for hours. My husband said he liked how Manhood Journey & City on a Hill Studio set up the lessons. They are straight forward and easy for one to carry out. He gained more confidence in sitting down doing Bible study with just the two of them. Although they are only halfway through the module, he said they will definitely continue and may even purchase the other modules that follow. My husband also said he would not have purchased the Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit for just him and son to do. He only sees it being necessary to purchase the whole kit if he had a guaranteed group to led then he would want the kit to be better prepared. Instead he thinks purchasing the individual modules as needed to be his preference. What our son liked about the study was when they discussed the 5 Big Rocks as well as the meaning of Scriptures. He learned that by himself a man is weak and can make many bad decisions, but with God in his life as his guide he is strong and wiser.
