Massachusetts (Chocolate Chip Cookie and Corn Muffins)

This week in our study of the Northeastern states is Massachusetts. The capital of Massachusetts is Boston. Did you know that the "Corn Muffin is Massachusetts State Muffin? Also the Chocolate Chip Cookie is the state cookie. It was designated the official cookie of the Commonwealth on July 9, 1997. A third grade class from Somerset proposed the bill to honor the cookie invented in 1930 at the Toll House Restaurant in Whitman." Here's some fun and yummy recipes to try...

Massachusetts State Cookie
Chocolate Chip Cookie:

Corn Muffin Recipe

  • 1/4 cup oil or melted butter
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2-4 Tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add oil or melted butter, milk, and egg. Mix until just blended. Place in a greased muffin tin.
Bake at 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Now what kid doesn't enjoy a cookie every now and then? If you are from Massachusetts feel free to share a recipe with us to try. I'll be back next week to share what's next in our study of the Northeastern states. Thank you for stopping by to learn along with us.
