myWorld Social Studies

The TOS Crew year has come to an end and a new crew year has begun. Lots of new and exciting things are happening. If you didn’t already know we now have a new name. Our new name is the Schoolhouse Review Crew. All of my reviews starting with this one will be under that label. My first review for the Schoolhouse Review Crew are products we received from Pearson Homeschool.

Pearson Homeschool is a curriculum supplier that “offers reading, language arts, science, math, and social studies programs for K-12 students. Their simple, step-by-step, and innovative educational homeschool materials that are easy to use and tailor to fit (adapt to) your child’s needs. The homeschool Pearson curriculum has been thoughtfully developed and tested by seasoned professionals, to make sure your child receives the finest education.  Their products are easy, flexible, and affordable to help you feel secure that you have built a curriculum that helps your child (ren) achieve and excel for a lifetime”.

For our review we received the 6th grade myWorld Social Studies (The Growth of Our Country). The myWorld Social Studies “utilizes storytelling to bring Social Studies content to life”. “It is designed to Connect Social Studies content with literacy instruction, Engage your child and advance their achievement, and Reduce your preparation time”. This comes as a bundle set which includes a Student Worktext, myStory video (DVD), a Teacher Resource Library DVD, and a Parent Guide. The price for this bundle set is $69.95.

How is the different components designed to be used? Click here to see the features and benefits.

The Student Worktext- “encourages greater interaction with the content and more active reading that leads to long term retention of skills and concepts. Your child will write, draw, circle, and underline content as they connect, experience, and understand the world of Social Studies”. Each chapter in the worktext begins with a myStory feature (to be used w/video I will talk about in next section). It is a real life story that relates to the particular lesson you are on. This provides the basis for discussion questions and critical thinking. Other sections in each chapter are:

Got It?
Try It!
Review and Assessment activity, ect.

The myStory Video DVD- “allows your child to see children of his/her own age invite them on a virtual field trip where they give tours of historic sites, or they will watch a character come to life in animation style like a graphic novel that depics important people of the past. This will help your child explore the Big Question in their worktext and the key ideas in each chapter. In turn he will make a personal connection to the lesson and build long-term understanding and knowledge.

The Teacher Resource Library DVD- has all the things you will need for lesson planning and other resources (hands-on activities, quizzes, tests, answer keys, ect.) to use with your child to go along with the lessons. There is a tutorial on how to use this DVD if you get stuck trying to figure out what to look for.
The Parent Guide provides encouragement, has helpful tips in using the curriculum, and explains how to use everything that comes in the bundle set.

When this package came in the mail I opened it with my son sitting nearby. His eyes were fixed on the workbook and the DVD’s that were inside. He immediately started flipping through the pages of the workbook looking over the contents. He took the book to his dad and started showing him things he wanted to learn about. The next day our homeschool day did not go as “I” had planned. My son and my husband sat for hours reading through the material and having long discussions about different things that happened throughout history. I didn’t mind this interruption in our regular schedule because it’s not often that dad relieves me from takes over the homeschooling for the day. My son really enjoyed the video stories as well as learning the history of slavery and the Civil War. He had so many questions so we took our time with that lesson. As for me I didn’t use the teacher lesson plans much. They are valuable resources to have but in my opinion it was a bit too intensive for me the average homeschooling mom to follow. Other crew members received different curriculums to review from Pearson Homeschool. Please visit this blog post and learn about the products they received.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions in this review are entirely my own. As a member of the Schoolhouse Review Crew I was not paid to write this but received myWorld Social Studies at no cost to me for review purposes, and to give my honest opinion.
