War of 1812

For the past few months we learned all about the War of 1812. We have watched many hours of video footage on the causes and effects of the war. We did some reading and made a lapbooking journal. I’m glad to be able to learn along side my son because I didn't remember any of what we learned from my school days.

Let me share with you some of the interesting things we learned about the War of 1812. Did you know the War of 1812 was another war fought between the British and Americans? It is sometimes known as the second American War of Independence. Do you know how long this war lasted? It lasted almost 2.5 years from June 18, 1812 - February 17, 1815.  Thomas Jefferson was president in the beginning then James Madison became president during this time. Other interesting things we learned about was about various Indian tribes ownership of the land, War Hawks, Impressment, America being defeated in Canada, Water Wars, the Burning of Washington D.C., the story behind our national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner", and so much more.

There's lots of interesting things to learn about the War of 1812. I hope you'll want to dig deeper into this bit of our history with your kids. With that being said we won't be doing any more war studies until after our new school year begins. I pray you enjoy your summer with your kidos :-)
